Outings

The Kent County Chamber of Commerce sponsored an early morning buffet breakfast meeting last week at the Fish Whistle in Chestertown. Over 30 members heard featured speakers Kent's Superintendent of Schools Dr. Barbara Wheeler and Chesapeake College President Barbara Viniar. Dr. Wheeler spoke about efforts to make Kent County High School a 21st Century School and Dr. Vinier gave everyone an update on the programs and progress of Chesapeake College.

The local DAR chapter ladies heard an interesting program last Thursday when Jack Shaum, a reporter for THE BAY TIMES, who has long been interested in the history of the Chesapeake Bay region and Southeast Atlantic coast spoke about VISITING CHESAPEAKE BY RESORTS BY STEAMBOAT - complete with slideshow! Interesting - and for those of us who have been around long enough! - Jack retired in 2002 after nearly three decades as a news anchor and reporter for news-talk station WBAL Radio in Baltimore. His journalism career began as a reporter for THE BALTIMORE NEWS AMERICAN and he also served as press secretary for the late Maryland Representative William O. Mills in Washington. The meeting was held at "The Boardroom" (formerly Calvin Frazier's barbershop we think!) on Cannon Street in Chestertown.

If you venture east to Dover, DE and decide to stay for dinner, be sure to try Cool Springs Fish Bar - just follow State Street south, crossover Rts. 13 and 10 and look for a shopping center on your left. This award winning restaurant never lets us down in quality and selection and a Kent Countian's grandson is one of the top waiters -- just ask for Chris -- and there may be a wait! They take no reservations but you can have fun watching the chef-owner at work while you wait!

Maybe our economy is picking up a little ... there was an overflow crowed at Chestertown's Fish Whistle last Friday night -- especially later when many stopped in for a 'nite cap' following a party at Radcliffe Creek School.

If you're driving along Rt. 20 today and pass the Kent Acres area, you probably noticed a home flying all Navy flags. This display is in honor of the U. S. Navy's 224th birthday (October 13, 1775!)....

Interesting question asked by a citizen at the Kent County Commissioners' meeting this morning: Why is bottled water used in the County Office Building at 400 High Street when Chestertown water is available? The Commissioners didn't have a ready answer but asked the citizen to leave her name and address and someone would 'get back to her'!

Out and About

It was a big win for the U. of Maryland home football game against Clemson on Saturday. There was an enthusiastic crowd who came out on a beautiful fall sunny day. Only one player, Webb Dulin, a sophomore, and graduate of Easton High School was from the Eastern Shore. Two former Maryland governors (Mandel and Hughes) were among those fortunate enough to be guests in newly renovated ‘President’s Suite’. The ‘Suite’, tastefully decorated with Terp turtles including Terp turtle tiles in the ladies restroom, is located in the center of the football field providing an unparalleled view of the game … fans looking out across the field saw a ‘sea’ of red – Maryland’s color, of course! U of Maryland has a huge band that performed before the game and during halftime. Particularly impressive were the perfectly in-sync flag wavers.

Big happenings at the Kent County Commissioners meeting this morning. State highway consultants unveiled their Chester River Bridge Study results. Lots of ‘media’ present
besides the reporter from the KENT COUNTY NEWS including WCTR. The report said: the Chester River Bridge, built in 1930, is good for 30 years from 1990 when it was last rehabilitated (that would mean it is ‘good’ until 2020). It was inspected in 1997 when it was reported as ‘functionally obsolete’ but not ‘structurally deficient’. A survey revealed that 77% of those traveling the bridge are making local trips; 23% are making ‘through’ trips; 10% are headed to Rt. 213; 6% are going to Rt. 291 and 5% have ‘other’ destinations. Truck traffic was destined for deliveries in Chestertown. A map showed options including a northern bridge as has been considered in the past and a southern bridge that would begin on Rt. 213 south of Kingstown, hook into John Hanson Road, then Airy Hill Road and then Rt. 20.

Kent’s Economic Development Director presented recommendations for new space for the Kent County Board of Education Administration: space at KRM Business Park or
space at Radcliffe Creek Industrial Park – no decision was made due to lack of funds!

Comments

Greetings from Chestertown … a big old tree has been ‘downed’ on north Queen Street – not sure if the ‘downing’ had the blessing of the Town hierarchy or if the resident owner of the tree had to obtain a permit … Three long time employees of our local newspaper were told yesterday they would be leaving their long time jobs – these people know well those who read the paper and those who advertise in the paper – the three long-time employees represent a total of more than 70 years on the staff of the KCN. That represents a lot of institutional memory lost for the readers - let us all hope our local newspaper – a community tradition – continues for many more decades…Subway seems to be doing a ‘booming’ business at lunch time with their $5 footlong subs! The line goes quickly – lots of repeat customers! It’s candidate time in Chestertown for Mayor and First and Third Ward Council representatives. Let us hope we have some competent people interested enough to have their names placed on the ballot – the election is November 3, 2009 – and there will be no early voting!
